What range of dates is acceptable for the casting dates of the heads and block for a 1968 corvette built Oct. 20.1968?

As you said the casting date was October 1967. The NCRS manual states that the casting date must precede the engine assembly date, and both must precede the vehicle assembly date by 2 to 8 weeks. On an exception basis, they do allow castings up to 6 months, but again, this is on an exception basis and there should be a documented rationale as to why the extended time frame exists.
The big block engine casting number for an October 1967 Corvette would be 3916321.

Hmm...I'm looking at purchasing a '71 454 with a casting date of September 15th 1970 and car assembly date code shows F05 or January 5th, 1971. So a spread of almost 4 months. So this isn't typical? Should be a tighter spread?

Should be tighter for a SHOW car. Watch out.
Good luck.
