I have a stock L-48 1980. It has the Q-Jet. Can't get it to idle down , seems to load up constantly , runs fine off idle. Have a Carter 600 cfm on the shelf, any thoughts on using this with an adaptor.

I would suggest having your Q-Jet properly rebuilt. It's an excellent carburetor. The Carter will certainly work...look at all the Edelbrock clones of it they sell. By the time you get adapters, a modified fuel line, fuel filter, adapt the linkages, acquired an idle kick-up solenoid and bracket (if you have a/c), and whatever else, you've pretty much paid the cost of a professional rebuild of your Q-Jet.
The Carter is a very good carburetor, and oe for many muscle cars as well as earlier Corvettes. I would think you'd do well to sell it to someone who has a mid-60's GM or Mopar muscle car who wants originality.

The two thing that make it typically idle fast are the fast idle cam sticking, and the secondary throttle sticking. The secondary can stick a tiny amount and really mess up the base idle. It also screws up your fuel mixture.
