I have considered placng a 1" spacer under my carb. I have a stock aluminum dual plane manifold on my LT 1 350 engine. does the hood have enough clearance between the stock open air cleaner? I read a article on spacers and they talked about these spacers increasing power and torque at the low to mid power band. High Velocity Heads has one ST4150-4AL that they reccomend but will it fit without hood interference. Thats the Question

I don't think it will without going to a shorter air filter element, or a dropped filter base. The only way to know for sure is to check the clearance you have now.
You could use some modeling clay(or play-doh) on the air cleaner top, and then slowly close the hood. Open the hood, and check to see how thick the clay is, and go from there.
You can also run a straight edge across the fenders, on the lips of the fenders where the hood fits, and measure from the highest point of the air cleaner to the straight edge.

My Red project car came with a eldebrock performer manifold and a 750 holley double pumper carb. Previous owner had a 1 inch spacer block on the car.

Actually...it could turn into a problem. At certain velocities driving forward, the rear of the hood could come up fast enough to flip it forward...possibly all the way off the car to the front, and then you could drive right over it. Do NOT ax me how I know this could happen....I do NOT care to discuss it any further.....

if you want low to mid range power use a 4 hole spacer, if you want mid to top end power use an open spacer, the spacer tricks the motor into beleaving it has a bigger intake manifold, sometimes these spacers help sometimes not.

If you use a spacer,any size spacer,I suggest a Phenolic type instead of aluminum for better service and performance.Test them both and the latter proved out to be the best. God luck on the depth/height of any of them..Have a great day.

I had to go with a 1/2" phenolic and 2" low profile filter. I've got an Edelbrock 2701 intake with a Holley 670 carb
. It just does fit.(at least on my 79)

I'll be curious, as the E10 gas in my carb boils after I shut it off in these Texas summer days. The mechanic I took it to wants to put a heat shield between my carb and the manifold. A phenolic spacer would be even better. I wish I had the car home so I could put a wad of clay on the air cleaner for ya.
I think the LT-1 already comes with a drop down air cleaner base.

F4Gary, do you use any additives to help compensate for the E10 gas you use? If not, I'd recommend a product called ValvTec. Go to there website and check it out. I get it from a local marime supply store (I believe it can only be found in a marine supply). I use it in all my vehicles when I can't get the non-ethanol gas (72 & 91 Vette, 92 full size Blazer and a 99 Buick Regal). You may not have experienced any issues yet with using the E10, but you eventually will.

F4Gary/Rick J I am presently evaluating a product from Lucas for counteracting the corrosive nature of Ethanol fuels and to date has improved idle,smoother idle and running.This in a '72 Chevy 1/2 ton truck I am testing. Product and will be used in my '80 Vette,'68 Camaro also.I have notice a slight increase of performance as well. I think at this time there is a marked improvement of performance,more later when more is determined.Have a great day all. Sal C
