Patrick,
I couldn't agree with you more about the MSD!
With the Q-Jet though, I'd get it rebuilt by someone who knows them really well. It's a great carb. when it's dialed in correctly.
I had mine rebuilt by Jim McGowan in Rockford, Ill. ( http://www.thequadshop.net/ ).
I got his info. here at C3VR. What an unbelieveable difference when I got it back & reinstalled it!
Let us know what you do.
Kevin

The '81 has the CCC(computer control command) type Quad. With the MSD controlling the spark, the electric carb is not needed.
You can safely remove the carb and the distributor, no problem. You will, however, have the "Check Engine" light shining at you. You can just remove the bulb for it, if you want.
Those cars were set to run soooo lean, it's ridiculous.

You can also cut the wire for the check engine light coming out of the computer, a lot easier to get to than the bulb. You'll need a schematic to identify it, unless someone here knows which wire it is.
