possibly egr valve. Try plugging the vacuum hose going to the egr valve and see if that helps.

It idles at 9000rpm??? That might be a problem, right there!
Yeah, could be an EGR issue, fuel, or carb. So many possibilities...
If the car had been sitting for a while, there may be some doo-doo in the carb, stopping up the idle circuits. If you raise the idle rpm with the idle screw, would it help?Adams' Apple 2007-11-07 20:30:32

Frist I hit one to many (0).The carb was rebuildt in aug 06,the car dosn't have a egr valve, there is a plate where it is soppose to be. I have adjusted the idle from 900 all the way up to a fast idle of 2500. and it still stalls. I put new vacuum hoses on, changed the fuel filter. My next step is to have the distributor checked, and recheck the timing agian.
Like I said Im' new at this, but I'll get it.Thanks

If it runs ok except when you put it in gear, even at 2500rpm, I think you may have a torque converter issue. The converter can cause the engine to lock down.
The only other idea I have is perhaps something is shorting out when you move the shifter, but...not a clue what that could possibly be. The one long shot, on that, would be the steering column lock, as it turns, could be touching a bare wire in the column.
Does it act like the engine is under a heavy load when you put it in gear?

check to see if you might have a leak around the bottom of carburetor, where it sits on the intake. Might be sucking air there ( just a wild thought)

Check your distributor. Bushings may be worn really bad causing timing to go way out. Been there.

I agree...I have seen this happen a number of times.
