Confused First let me thank everyone for the advice(75 engine) Im' going to use a crate motor with the intake. I need a little more advice today while I was out my car started acting up.When I can to a stop the car acted like it ran out of gas"it died but it started right up".The only thing I can think to check is the fuel pump, but I think it's ok because the car starts up and runs until I come to a stop.It idles at 9000 rpm, the problem start when it's in drive.Even though I am going to be changing the motor I would like to keep my car running till everything comes togetther.

possibly egr valve. Try plugging the vacuum hose going to the egr valve and see if that helps.

It idles at 9000rpm??? That might be a problem, right there!
Yeah, could be an EGR issue, fuel, or carb. So many possibilities...

If the car had been sitting for a while, there may be some doo-doo in the carb, stopping up the idle circuits. If you raise the idle rpm with the idle screw, would it help?Adams' Apple2007-11-07 20:30:32

Frist I hit one to many (0).The carb was rebuildt in aug 06,the car dosn't have a egr valve, there is a plate where it is soppose to be. I have adjusted the idle from 900 all the way up to a fast idle of 2500. and it still stalls. I put new vacuum hoses on, changed the fuel filter. My next step is to have the distributor checked, and recheck the timing agian.Embarrassed Like I said Im' new at this, but I'll get it.Thanks

If it runs ok except when you put it in gear, even at 2500rpm, I think you may have a torque converter issue. The converter can cause the engine to lock down.

The only other idea I have is perhaps something is shorting out when you move the shifter, but...not a clue what that could possibly be. The one long shot, on that, would be the steering column lock, as it turns, could be touching a bare wire in the column.

Does it act like the engine is under a heavy load when you put it in gear?

check to see if you might have a leak around the bottom of carburetor, where it sits on the intake. Might be sucking air there ( just a wild thought)

Check your distributor.  Bushings may be worn really bad causing timing to go way out.  Been there.
