When I rebuilt my top end of the motor I replaced cam, lifters, pushrods etc. But I did not know how to time? index the cam. The car runs fine but I am thinking that it might not be tuned properly. How do you time a cam and can it be done after the cam is installed?

Scott, check out This article on cam timing, and it's effects...
This link will open up a PDF file, so you need Adobe Reader to make it work.
You'll see the specific info on degree-ing the cam, and advancing/retarding the cam about halfway thu the article.
IF you aligned the timing marks on the crank gear and the cam gear when the cam was installed, it should still be right. SOME crank gears have multiple keyways to allow for advancing or retarding the cam. So..depending on what type gear set-up you have...
You can change the cam timing, and even the cam itself, with the engine in the car.
