Question for you engine gurus....is a cam lock plate a requirement or just a nice extra safety item? I' ve seen engines with them and without. Confused  My comp cams kit did not come with one.

Dan, I would add the lock plate to your installation. It's really keeping the bolts from vibrating out after you've torqued them in. The tabs bend over the bolts. The plate only cost a few bucks, but you'll ne able to sleep knowing you've locked it down properly.

My thoughts exactly all the way around! I did do some research and found the comp cams lock plate/bolt kit for $2.50 at Summit....unfortunately they want $4.95 to ship it Unhappy.....just doesn't seem right to pay more for shipping than the part!!! Oh well, checked locally around here and nobody has it so I guess I'm stuck   Cry

If I remember right  in HS when I did my first engine rebuild I think my 265 came with em, but somewhere along the line GM dropped them along with the oil slinger, I've never seen or heard of camshaft bolts coming loose, but by all means use one if you want, I would also install a cam button also.

I guess if you didn't want to use the lock plate, you could use Loctite. I still like the lock plate. I've assembled many compressors (in my line of work) and not one bolt ever worked loose. These are on compressors that pretty much run constantly. When I tore them down, everything looked as good as when I put them together. The only thing I would do; is never try to re-use an old lock plate.

Ordered the lockplate kit this morning, but won't get here until Wed./Thur.....a little bit of a set back......but should be able to get everything else done on the engine.

Dan, just remember to take your time...........double check everything. You will have the satisfaction that YOUClap did everything right. It makes for good thoughts when you lie down to sleep, or driving a long distance in your car. The best of luck to you!Thumbs Up
