On my 1976 with 15x7 wheels what is the maximum tire width for both front and rear tires?

A '76 should have 15"x8" rims on it. The only size Chevrolet approved it for was a GR70-15 radial tire. That corresponds roughly to a P215/70R-15 or a P225/70R-15...not an exact cross reference. The 215's should fit fine...225's may not clear on some cars.
You may be able to fit other size tires, but that will take some experimentation to make sure there are no clearance problems.

If you have the stock 15X8 rims you could fit up to a 255/60/15 tire on them. I run 245/60/15's on mine and they fit perfectly.

I have done some research and found the original diameter for the F70-15 that was original on my 75. It is the same as about a 211-70 or 212-70. That means a 205 is a bit small, and a 215-70 is the closest possible replacement. Going to a wider tire, the 255-60 is the same diameter. But the wider tires can rub on some cars.
