Brakes...up grade or stock, that is the question

I have a 1981, with 45,000 miles. With the Michigan winter rolling in, time for a few repairs! I see many choices for brakes, what is the best way to go? "O" ring, or lip, slotted or drilled or is it what ever you can afford?
