Joel,

Let me open another can of worms - the AutoZone guy said that carbon metallics are a type of semi-metallic. Was he blowin smoke up my a**?  I'm guessing yes. With that in mind - any particular brand you recommend? Do I need to just ask for semi-metallic, or is there any other name that could be used? Thanks

Naw, he was tellinya the truth, hence forth the name "carbon-metallic". If yer just wantin ta get rid of the skweek (Joels term) go after the 2 tasks he metioned and it'll go away. Then ya can just ride out the pads as intended.

I think it is the metalic pads. Not as forgiving as the old aspestos pads. They squeek, but you won't get cancer of the lung. Unless you smoke....your tires.

Each pad material has its own surface friction area.  When it interacts with the metal it sets up a vibration, hence the squeal.  You may also want to be sure to lube the tips of the pads where they touch the calipers.  Also you can get a antisqueel compound and apply to the piston side of the pads.  Anything to absorb the vibration will help.

The C5 and C6 use the carbon metallic.  Very good stopping power with a lot of heat resistance.  Also used on aircraft and UPS trucks.

I just have the standard organic pads on my car, and they are quiet.  But follow any of the above suggestions and it may help.

I like the organics, too, but then, I hardly ever drive the '74.
On the subject of using an antiskweel compound, that werks otay, too. The problem I have found with that is, it sticks the pads to the pistons, and unless your rotors are perfectly parallel(ie. not warped), it seems to create a more pronounced "pumping" action of the pistons, allowing even more air into the system than normal. I think using the "cushion/anti-noise" pads, that go on the backs of the brake pads are a better choice for the brake systems on our Sharks. That's just me...

Joel you are correct.  But if you have o-ring calipers (I dont) it won't be a problem.
