Vette(s): I picked up my 77' back in Oct. of 2012. She has just over 45,000 miles on it. Its powered by the L-82 with an Auto trans. Its all stock with one repaint (code 80) Corvette Tan with Brown Int. I'm the third owner.
I'm getting ready to replace the brake pads on my 77'. To make things easier I ordered a Caliper Piston Retainer from a vender. It's that thin metal tool that holds the pistons in and clips over the caliper. Has any of you guys ever used it. What is the best way to do it. After I remove the pin, do I slide it between the old pad and the piston, then clip it on the caliper. Or should I remove the old pad first and use the tool to compress the piston, then clip it on the caliper..

Hiya,  I would remove the pad then compress the piston and place the retainer on... the retainers are spring steel, and not very thick.... i have a pair somewhere, never used them... usually i take a C-clamp and compress the pistons with the old pad, the remove the old pad, insert new pad, repeat for other side and hope compressing them doesn;t push out the side i just did. Then I'd place a socket of similar length to the width of the disc and then wiggle the caliper back on.....

so long story short.... compress piston with old pad(so not to damage the piston), place new pad in, and good to go..hopefully(you are dealing with a vette after-all....nothing goes according to plan...usually)
