Brake Caliper Question

When I bought my 74 coupe it had three new calipers, pads, master cylinder and booster. My question: The passenger side rear caliper has the bleed screw on the underside where the rest are on top, is this the wrong caliper or on the wrong side?

Sounds like an 'odd duck' to me. On my '70 the rear calipers have an inside AND an outside bleeder on the topside. The fronts just have a single bleeder on the topside pointing towards the engine.

There SHOULD be 2 bleeders at the top side. If the brake line is installed properly and not modified in any way, I would bet there is one bleeder on the brake line side at the top. If the other bleeder is at the bottom, it seems as if the caliper has missmatched halves. I don't think it would matter, but it might be a pain when the time comes to bleed the brakes. Somebody probably replaced seals at one time and mixed things up. Mike PS stainless brake seals do go bad!

I guess I need to further investigate what has been done to the brake system. The rear caliper in question has one bleeder on the bottom and the caliper has recently been replaced. The rear caliper on the opposite side has just one bleeder on the top side that I have seen (caliper looks original). I will go out and make sure I haven't over looked other bleeders as I haven't really been looking for more than one bleeder. The top side of the caliper does have a plug in it, but it's a pipe fitting. Is it possible that when the mechanic replace the calipers (who works for me) piped the system wrong? Should there be two bleeders on the rear brakes? An your right the way it is set up right now is a real bad to bleed.

You should have a 'left rear inner, left rear outer, right rear inner, right rear outer, left front and right front'. All together, 6 bleeders.

It's pouring down buckets of rain here tonight, so I'll have to check later in the week. It sounds like the wrong calipers were installed on the rear. I really appreciate the info as I wasn't sure where else to find the answer.

I have seen some rebuilders put bleeders on both ends of the outer calipers. I guess it's easier to build and keep track that way. If you also have one on the top, just ignore the bottom. If not, the outer half is for the other side. That's almost impossible to bleed. Good luck.
