I am going to replace the half shaft U-joints , do most people balance the half shafts? The local drive shaft rebuilder says usually there is no need but the drive shafts even from the factory sometimes are not perfectly balanced.

well it is true that half shafts dont spin as fast as your drive shaft such as 3.55 less as you driveshaft if you got a 3.55 diff. Tires still need to be in good balance or else they produce noticeable vibrations at higher speeds. So your halfshafts should still be balanced in my opinion.

1/2 Shafts don't need to be balanced. They are too short. If you put new u-joints in, you can bolt it right back in the car. If you shaft has a bing ding in it than I would consider getting them balanced and/or replaced.

Also you need to reinforce the 1/2 shaft flange when you are pressing out and pressing in the new u-joints. If you do not, you will bend the flange and you'll be out another $75 or so. You can either fab up a 1/2" thick plate or you can use your spindle flange. If you use your spindle flange, be sure to re-torque the spindle nut to 100 ft/lbs and throw a cotter pin back in the spindle.
