All the catalogs now have a chip upgrade for the 81.  Im very skepticle..  Any of you running one?

I don't have any computer stuff in mine anymore, but if I did I wouldn't waste my money on a chip for the '81's. The money vs. the benefit isn't worth it.
 
 Besides '80 California 305 vettes, the '81 model year introduced the CCC system. It's very slow in calculating adjustments. It makes around 15 calculations per second. Compare that to the Tuned port era vettes which were around 250 calculations per second.  And those are considered slow by todays standards.
 
 If you are looking for more power and yet want to keep it stock looking. Then I would suggest a cam change (computer friendly profile) , shave the cylinder heads a touch, add 1.6 rocker arms, and change out those 2.87 gears in the rear end. It ain't cheap. But if you want more power, it'll cost ya. That's my .02 cents.

Hi Kevin, I've noticed that chip offering also, tempting isn't it. My local sources tell me that the first generation chip in '81 barely controlled more than the idle for smog harnessing purposes. We really don't have much more power built in to let out. Even changing the advance springs in the distributer would only change the power curve but not produce more power.For a little more punch I changed out the cat. conv. to a high flow and dropped the belt on the smog pump. It felt very noticeable and frankly I bought most of my cars for less than the price of a Hi Perf. motor. Guess I'll just have to think about what's most important to me Confused.

Darryl, I have a 355 rear, ez flow exhayst from manis back, edle intake, blue printed carb, 2100 stall and a shift kit.  the 130.00 seemed ike cheap hp but it sounded a little snake oily....

The puter in those cars only controlled the idle fuel mixture, and the timing...nothing else. Put a chip in it???? For what? About all it could possibly do is advance the timing a little more...why bother?

I looked into these about a year ago for my 82...all the advice from other forums was "Don't waste your money".....so I didn't, paid for a few extra tanks of gas

I agree also, they are a waste of money, a good tune up will do more.

And the consensus is the chip is a rip! Daryl and the others are correct! If you want more HP look at cam, headers, etc. If ya want it ta fly supercharge it and be done!
