I would appreciate comments and tips on rebuilding the rear end on my 82.  It makes a constant "whirring" sound on the interstates.  Loud enough to interfere with the exhaust note, so it's annoying.  Have changed fluid twice.  140K+ miles on it.  Have replaced left trailing arm assy after bearing failure.  New U-joints on same half-shaft.  I have good mechanical skills, garage, hand tools.

Rebuilding a rear is not something to try unless you know what you're doing. The set up is not so easy.
You could however get a rebuilt unit and put it in yourself. You can get rebuilt units with the ratio you want from several places, Mid-America is one. I did mine that way, went with 3.55:1 gears.

We have a local rebuilder who can do it for you, or send you one of his exchange, if you are interested.
