but you changed the plug.

But did you check the gap on the new plug... not aways right out of the box either..

Good call on that one.

I just did a tune up on the 71 and not one of the eight plugs were gapped the same from the factory. One was at over 50 and two were almost completely closed. The rest were at or around 35 .

Always Re-gap the plugs after you buy them, klutzy kids at the parts store ,drop them on the floor, check for cracked insulators too I'd go along with the bad cap,my $.02

But....but....I thought everyone knew that?!
Never trust a new plug to be gapped properly for any application. The only ones you don't have to worry about are the ones with the four electrodes...you know...the really fancy($$$$) ones!

Changed out the cap and rotor.  Still not firing.  I did notice the temp of the car is down to 170 or so when running it.

What ignition system do you have? Points? HEI? Aftermarket?
You have good compression on the cyl., so that shouldn't be a problem. Now, all you need is fuel, and fire! (At the right time, of course!)

I think I would revist the compression in that cyl.

Have you checked to see if the plug is firing?
Take it out, or use a different plug. Plug the wire in, and hold the end of the plug against the engine(or other good ground...preferably NOT the carb!)), then have someone start it up. If you see a good spark across the electrode of the plug, then it is firing. That means the problem would have to be no fuel in that cyl., or a vac. leak really close to that cyl.
If there is no spark, then you have a bad wire, or something else is going on with the distributor.

Update.  Checked the compression, still at 173.  Plug fires, wires are good.  Going into testing the vacuum.
