OK I know that I am all over the map with these numbers but I am actively searching for a engine to put in my non matching vette. So I can pick this one up for 5000.00 The guy says he put illumine heads on it and total rebuild it about 15 years ago to put in his 69 vette. So it has been setting in his shop on a engine stand the past 15 years. It looks pretty good we took a wrench and it did turn over. I know it stills need a rebuild he says the cam and other things he put in to it should push 600 hp. I check what I know it it reads a 409 is this correct

I'm not sure I'd pay 5 G's for a non-match motor needing a rebuild.
Where on the block are you seeing these numbers? What's the casting date? If it really is a 409 (can't find my reference book) it's a different configuration block, a big brother to a 348. Kind of rare, but not a vette engine.

If it's a 409 it's definitely not a Vette engine. It's what's referred to as the "W" head. Look at the heads and valve covers...they would look like an upside down "W".
A correct 348 or 409 would be worth something to owners of late '50s or early '60s Chevy guys, but has no place in a Vette. Parts for those engines are mucho expensive as well...they used many proprietary parts that don't interchange with regular small and big blocks.
Again, if it is a 409. and unless you can get it dirt cheap to re-sell to someone else needing that engine, I'd run fast and run far.
If it is a big block that might be correct for a Vette, $5k is a lot if it needs a rebuild. If it's not something rare like an L88 block, you can buy new 454 blocks and build them the way you want...or a crate engine and be more cost effective.
Get all the numbers and post them here...someone should be able to figure it out for you.

Vette(s): 1972 conv., sunfire yellow, blk interior, blk vinyl and convertible top. Off frame restoration with American Speed 383 stroker engine producing 500hp plus a 200hp NOS system. MSD ignition. Hooker super competition headers with chambered exhaust.
That's either a 396 or a 402.
