Help? I am having trouble trying to get my 4 spd into first gear. I can engage the clutch and engage all gears except first gear. When I let the clutch out, it pops out of gear and grinds. This is the only gear that this happens in. Over the weekend I took the Hurst shifter loose, but I did not disconnect the linkage. Any suggestions or is it time to rebuild?
Thanks,
Steve

Did you have this problem before you took the shifter loose? If not, a simple linkage adjustment should cure it.

If the problem was there before, then you probably have internal problems. That could range from a worn shift fork, to a worn gear/coupler.
It's unusual for 1st to have worn synchro teeth, since it is not a "shifting" gear, but, it could happen. There could be excessive end-play, also. Unfortunately, if the linkage adjustment doesn't solve the problem, it will need to be removed for repair.

Thanks for the feedback Joel. I didn't have this problem originally. I didn't want to start adjusting the linkage, because I never took the linkage loose.

It is actually a Hurst shifter that bolts to the transmission. That is the reason I am suprised that it would need to be re-adjusted. But I will start there and hope that is all it is.
