Vette(s): 1973 coupe Under Construction

First off let me introduce myself I am a 22 year old engineering student at the university of Illinois.  I have been lurking on this site for several years, probably just after it was created.  Recently my dad bought a 73 coupe that is very abused.  I intend to help him restore it this summer and some weekends.  check this link for some pictures.

Now for my question.  The car has a bare block that is a two bolt main.  How much power can a two bolt block reliably handle.  I have heard wild opinions both ways and figured I would fish for a few more.

Properly built, the 2 bolt will give you everything you need. Unless you plan on turning very high RPM's, like over 8 grand, the 2bolt will be fine.

Agreeded.  For a street car the 2 bolt is fine.  It will handle the HP you want.

a properly balanced 2 bolt isnt anymore likely to blow than a properly balanced 4 bolt..

if in any doubt..  if you take a block into a machine shop they can drill the holes and tap them..  then all you need is 4 bolt caps..

What are splayed caps?  I've heard the term before, but never with a description or picture.

splayed caps have 4 bolts but the outside 2 bolts are drilled at an angle giving the caps added strength.

Thanks smoke-m.  Awesome looking engine compartment!  I am incredibly intrigued by the valve covers.  I'd just like to see the rockers in operation as the engine runs.  Even at idle I assume they are moving so fast you really can'y see much?

well I ve ran my engine with the valve covers off before, and its cool to see them cycle. You can see the individual rockers go up and down. I think it would be neat to make some covers like that, since they are not sold any more.
