I recently purchased a 68 L71 with the 3X2 setup from a dealer who's "mechanic" (detailer) rebuilt the center carb as the gas contained water from sitting for a period of time. Upon completion of the "rebuild", the center carb dumped gas into the engine. I removed the motors top end, intake manifold, valve covers, etc.., flushed the motor and plan on rebuilding the carbs. I'm looking for advice on the rebuild process. I understand the Holley two barrel is fairly simple and easy to rebuild but I do not want a repeat of the last rebuild. I'm a fairly competent mechanic but I wonder if I might be better off sending the complete intake system out for the rebuild. Thoughts, suggestions, opinions?

I have a '69 L71 that was completely redone by its previous owner. He sent the three carbs (and I have the invoice) to Holley for rebuilding and refinishing. It was in 2001 that the "3X2 Holley Custom Restoration" was done and the cost at that time was $480 for all three carbs.
Something to consider.

Check with some of our supporting vendors. There are a couple of "Holley Rebuild" books out there, and they do include the 2bbl carbs, as well as the 3bbl.

Or find a Saturday to take a drive, get the rebuild kits, and come to Cuyahoga Falls and we will do the job. I know it's a long drive, it will take a good chunk of your weekend, but what the hey. If you prefer get here in your other car, and just bring the manifold and carbs. Then I can fill you in on the final adjustments.
Your cost is getting here, the carb kits, cleaner, iced tea, and lunch. You also want to get new floats. Let me know.
