He's asking about 255/70s, not 60s!
Yep and I think we are telling him they may be incorrect.......
Sounds like you're telling him what he already knows about the 60s without even addressing the question about the 70s.

Just returned from Firestone.... The manager said in her three years working for them, she had never had to do the 30 return guarantee. They were not happy about it as I did agree on the 255/70's, but they are going to exchange them for the correct 255/60's. The price difference is $20 more per tire for the correct 255/60's and remounting, shop fee's etc. I also told them I'd pay for their courier fee of $25 so I can have they specially delivered and installed tomorrow. So, about $120 more; $80 of this is my plain and simple mistake for not paying attention to what tire size I needed!

How it this happen:
  I had it in my head that the 255/70-15 was the option over the stock 225\70-15, but the correct option is 255/60-15 ....  The tires I got were 2.1" taller than the optional (255/60) size and 1.7" taller than stock (225/70) tires.Ouch

                The Facts:
* Stock: 225/70-15 - Height: 27.4"
* Optional: 255/60-15 - Height: 27.0"
* My wrong size: 255/70-15 - Height: 29.1"

  Sounds confusing but it really isn't, just my mistake! BUT, their data base did NOT cover anything below 1983 model years; if it did, I would assume they would have had notations about size and fit of these tires on my 82??

 Lesson learned!
I took pictures of the 255/70's installed and I will take pics of the correct 255/60's when they are installed tomorrow and post a side by side comparison in case anyone ever wants to know how they look. Just think 4X4, wait until you see the pics.....Shocked

Thanks guys!

Phil, glad they got you hooked up. Yes put up the pictures they should prove to be interesting.
I know my OEM Eagles were old and hard so maybe thats why this new tire seems so nice, but so far I'm very pleased. I know tire rack rated them very high. Hope they give you the mileage and traction your lookin for.
Thanks for the post, this stuff always helps others.
Enjoy.

The correct tires (255/60)are now on and all is good!Approve
Kudos to Firestone!!
You can see there is a BIG difference between the 255/60 and 255/70's;
the 255/70's look like drag slicks and they would look cool IF they actually were slicks.....

The front tires are the Goodyear Eagle GTII which will be replaced next month with the Indy 500!
Thanks everyone!

ebo,
  I did some hard driving on the way home with the new tires and I am impressed! They corner/grip better than the Eagles with very little wash out. I will have to wait until the streets are wet to really put them to the test - cannot be worse than the Eagles when wet!!

You WILL be impressed with The new tires.  The wet traction is awesome!  At least you guys had Goodyears on.  My 79 came with Jetson tires with a build date of 1988!

Thumbs%20UpWOW that is a big difference in hight of the vehicle. I want to change tires and rims maybe early next year. I would like some chrome craiggers and I want the Indy tires. Good info to know!!!
