Vette(s): Currently own: 1980 L-48 automatic. Custom painted in gray metal flake with silver hood accent. Oyster interior. Previously owned: 1976 silver Sting Ray with black interior. 1980 L-48 black with oyster interior.
Based on my 1980 Vette Vin Number, the engine is an L-48 but the air cleaner is a dual snorkel with the front center air duct. All parts suppliers like Corvette Central and Eckler's show a single snorkel air cleaner for the L-48. The engine looks to be original.

Was there a change in air cleaner system at some point or was it an option of some sort?

Not sure what year, but at one point, ALL the later engines used the dual snorkel air cleaner...I think that started around '78-'79...

Vette(s): 1978 Silver Anniversary L82 4spd (M21) Red Leather. Pace Car is in the hands of a new caretaker.
Corvette Black Book says they started that on the '79's to gain about 5 more hp on the L48.
