1972 coupe

Hi Guys & Ladies, Well I am back in the glass again and I could not be happier, although these machines are harder to get in and out of than they were 15 years ago. I bought a 1972 soupe. New paint and interior, good mech shape and a numbers matching car. No history of ownership but a nice car. I have in mind taking out the org engine and putting in a warmer engine, maybe a 383 however I have heard that these wear very quickly. The car is a 350/350 but I don't know the rear ratio, though I would suspect it is a 373 I would appreciate any suggestions. I thought maybe a Holley Systemax System. I want to spend about 5000 tops for a engine /trans combo. I am really excited about having another Vette. this is my 8th. I have spent the last 10 or so years with a Rolls Spirit that I have restored and still am foolish about the car, just wanted to "wrap my a-- in fiberglass yet again" Great site and this is a great hobby! Depends on what you want to do.  You can pick up any short block and add any companies top end kit to it and make great power.  Quick way to keep your vette going down the road while working on another engine.  i didn't have that luxury.  Finishing up my engine now and hope to have it back between the rails in a couple of weeks.

I wouldn't hesistate getting a 383 they will last just as long as a 350-355.  5K is a healthy budget for an engine.  You should be able to pickup complete shortblocks for 700 to 900 and add a top end kit for 1300 to 1800.  Plan on adding about 500 to 800 for accessories like valve covers, distributor, oil pan, new or used carb, and other misc items and you will be well under your budget and have a nice engine.

Thanks Guys!! When I get some pics I will get them posted. I also neglected to add that in the 5K budget I will go the 700 odrive route. I am leaning towards the 383 unless I find a 400 block. I know that a stroker will make great pawer but a$$ kicking power comes from cubic inches and I do not want to go the BB route. I will look and think awhile then build something. One question (among many). Will a edelbrock hirise clear the stock hood or do I need a L type ? hood? Thanks a lot!!!

Nope high rise wont do it,less you want to poke a hole in the hood ,some of the other guys in here will tell you which one will work
