Hello Folks,

I need a little help; I've got a 1971 Coupe (270hp/Auto) that I restoring and need the following information:

1.  I need to replace the capacitor attached to the bracket that holds the coil but regular parts house guys can't find one probably because I'm calling it "the capacitor attached to the bracket that holds the coil".  Mine is missing; can anyone give me a correct part number and provide the correct name of this part.  They keep trying to sell me the capacitor that's mounted inside the distributor (non-TI) and that might be correct, but would like verification before I fry something.

2. Totally unrelated, but what finish was applied to the bales that secure the top (lid) of the master brake cylinder.  Mine are completely rusted and would like to restore the correct finish.

Thanks as always for the assistance.

The only thing on the bracket on my 72 is the coil.  Maybe it's a HEI thing.

I think your referring to a condenser on your bracket. A scratch pad will clean up the bails and a little polish.

Well after a lot of investigation, it turns out to be the coil bracket mounted radio capacitor used for reduction of noise in the radio.  So I've purchasd one on ebay.  Now I need to get the radio working.

As for the bales, no finish was applied, just raw metal.  So I'll take the advice to clean and polish them.

Thanks Folks!

I don't believe the master cylinder bails were bare metal.  I think they had something like a zinc dichromate finish but you could check a NCRS Judging Manual for a definitive answer.  If you don't care, then you could just clean them and clear coat them to prevent future rust.

The MC cover "bails" are un-finished, "natural" steel.
As far as the capacitor, you could go to any Radio Shack and get one, if you know the electrical value of it. They tend to leak over time, and most of them just get thrown away, which is why most cars don't have them. Wink
