Vette(s): 1980 L-48 still in the middle of a frame-off.
Today I wanted to start the car and do some tuning on it.  The engine is turning over very slow and the cables are getting warm hmmmmm.

So I pull the battery and have it tested. It tests fine with plenty of amps in it.  The connections are good so I take out the starter and have it tested.  Sure enough the starter is bad. It's a NAPA premium starter that has been in the car a week.

Back to the store it goes and they will have another on in the morning.  That is 4 starters that either did not fit or were bad. I just hope this one works for a while.

Dennis,
I'm glad you're well enough to be out there working on your 'Vette!
Will NAPA be replacing it free of charge?

That sounds almost unbelievable. Are these starters new or rebuilt? Are you running 12:1 compression or tar for motor oil? They do make high torque starters. How about your alignments to your flexplate/flywheel? At least they are working with you by switching starters........but I wonder? I hope it all works out for you.Thumbs%20Up

All the starters were rebuilt units. NAPA is replacing this one at no charge since it has a lifetime warranty. The compression ratio is only 10.1:1.  I just think I ran into a bad batch.  The other starters just didn't match up right.

Dennis,

Did you check your clearance with the flexate and starter gear? Binding could slow the starter down and heat up the cables.....

Just a thought. Good luck!!

Any re-man electrical stuff is suspect from the git-go, imho. I've installed waaaaaaay too many re-man starters, alternator, blower motors, etc., that didn't work, or only worked for a short time. Ya just never know...that's why most places have that "Lifetime" warranty. They know it prolly won't work either, but they got plenty of them in stock. Eventually, one of them will work.
I once put 5 alternators in a row on an old LTD I had before I got one that would actually charge right out of the box. Just kept taking them back and getting another one...no questions, no hassle. Maybe that's why ya see so many people installing parts in the parking lots at the auto parts store...

We have some real quality rebuilders in our area.  You might be better off taking your fresh rebuilt one to a good rebuilder, and having it checked out.  I don't think they turn the armature at the cheap places.  And for future problems, start with the rebuilder.

Well I put the new rebuilt starter from NAPA in and it turned right over like it should.  I just hope this is the last starter I put in this car.  I am getting very good at changing them out pretty quickly especialy in 28 degree weather.
