Wiper Motor

Anyone ever have their wiper motor appart on a 72.

I have mine off for a spit shine and decided that it might be best to take it appart to inspect it. There is not much too it, but I'm surprised these things work because part of the electrics is out in the open and part of it is interal with the ring gear, worm gear and the grease.

Which brings me to my question. On the outside are three prongs for the wiring harness to plug into. Those lead to the motor and to an internal electrial piece that controls the positioning of the wiper blades. Its a pale green piece. You have to lift both pieces out at the same time.

I noticed that theis pale green plastic piece of mine that has electrics on it internally is cracked. Is this going to be a problem?

As long as the unit still functions, the crack won't cause a problem. If the crack seperates, then you could have a problem.

When you put the cover back on, it can be tricky.
The plastic cam under the cover must line up with the pin on the motor assembly. You want the motor in the parked position. Then locate the hole on the front of the cover (washer pump) and turn the cam to aling with the hole. A pin can be used to hold it in location. Then install the washer cover.

If it is not lined up, it either won't work, or make a lot of noise.

Your explanation of how to put the wiper motor cover back on was perfect. Could'nt figure it out myself. I put a small screwdriver into the cover hole to hold the cam in position and it worked perfectly the first time. Thanks
Now to my real problem. My washer pump (5 port) piston goes up and down but doesn't suck in water. When I blow water into the inlet(fat) tube on the front cover it dribbles out a small rectangular hole in the back of the piston cylinder. Any idea whats wrong or suggestions?

There are check valves under the cap where the lines hook. If they go bad or get dirty, the pump won't work right. You can replace or clean them with little effort. But the dribbling out of the back, it could just be from the piston position, or the pump assy could be worn out. I'm guessing this is the case with the leak you have.
