I'm restoring a 75 and was wondering what the gloppy sealing (technical term) stuff is around the penetrations.  Is there a replacement equivalent.

The "gloppy" sealant is actually just asphalt....without the rocks! You can get by with using some types of brushable undercoating.
If you are restoring this for "Judging" purposes(NCRS-Bloomington), you may want to check with one of your local roofing companies, or even a local home improvement store(Lowes-Home Depot) and see if you can get a gallon or so of roofing asphalt. This is essentially what was used at the factory.

If you don't care about NCRS, use black silicone sealant. It's shiney black and seals forever. Use water and rubber gloves for nice smoothing of the beads. Plan on working a wet patch no more than five minutes. Just follow directions.............something that's against my religion !!!!

Thank you.  As far as NCRS - I take the info under consideration and the do what I want.  This is my first which I have waited a long time for and I'm progressing as time and $$$$ permit.

Thanks again

Here's a link to a photo showing my windshield wiper area that I painted with a mixture of Rustoleum Gloss and some Semigloss mixed in to cut the sheen...(they did not offer matte or satin yet)  This was done 16 yrs ago and still looks great.
