I am going to rechrome the two windshield convertible latch corners and the center latch/mirror assembly on my '68, and, while I am at it, have the center stainless trim buffed out.

Can anyone help me with tips on removing the upper center stainless trim piece?  I have the interior trim pieces out, the center latch/mirror assembly removed, the six screws on the inside of the frame removed, the interior screws on the corner assemblies removed, but do not want to go further on the stainless section until I know how to remove it withour damaging it.

Any tips will be appreciated.  Thanks for your help!

First double check for hidden screws or rivets.  I believe you need to remove the windshield to get the corners out, so scrape out the sealer to check.  Then the whole piece is set in tar.  So just work carefully and pull it up a little at a time.  Or just buff it in place.  You can buy small kits that work in your electric drill.  Bigger scratches can be sanded out, then sanded with finer and finer paper, up to 2000 grit.  Then carefully buff with finer and finer rouge.

Thanks Larry!    I may just have to take it to a glass shop and "get 'er dun"...

I know that there is a screw on the top of the corners, under the stainless top piece.  The stainless has to come off first, just never have worked in this area of a car before.   The repair manuels give you nothing but "take it to a pro"!  LOL

Thanks again!

If there are assorted attaching parts involved, they will be shown in the assembly instruction manual (AIM) along with original part numbers.  Ditto on spot welds.  The AIM will show if they were used and were you can expect to find them.
