I know this has been beaten to death, BUT! Coming home yesterday from a long trip I noticed flakes coming out from the upper windshield area and falling in my lap. When I went to check the flakes with a magnet they attracted. What and how do I remove from the windshield trim inside to check for frame rust. I'm getting somewhat edgy about this car becase it also used 1.5 qts of oil for a 250 mile trip.

Virtually every piece of trim on the windshield is fastened with Philips Head screws. Just take your time and either take notes or, the best thing to do is to take digital photos before and during the disassembly.
It's really very simple to remove the trim to inspect the frame.
If you are lucky and just have some surface rust, clean and first coat it with etching primer.

Had the same problem with my '72. Turns out that there IS surface rust on my winshield frame. But the good news was that the rust-chunks were actually from the header trim piece, not the frame. (The inside of the windshield trim pieces are steel.)

$50 for a replacement trim piece . . . versus $600 for a windshield frame. It was a VERY GOOD day. |thumb|

Good luck.
