Just looking for suggestions. When I paint my 75 this spring or summer it's going to be bright red. The factory was red, but not bright enough. I bought it with no paint on the car. It's going to look very good, and I'm not worried about factory or even a stock GM color, just screaming bright red. I have painted a couple of cars Ford B2 color code, a 69 GTO and 70 Grand Sport, and they looked great. This is bright without huge expense of some red paints. Any other thoughts?

Take a look at Porsche "Guards Red". I've got it on my Triumph TR6 and it looks pretty good. There are plenty of Porsche's out there to compare it with. Its a standard color and you can just go in and ask for it at the paint supplier and they know what it is.

Hey Ken, my brother-in-law has a candy apple red on his '70 AMX that hurts the eyeballs when the sun is on it. I'll ask him if he remembers what brand and code it is.

Hey Ken,
Here's the reply I received from my brother-in-law.
I know I have a couple of pictures of his AMX in an album somewhere. I'll take a look, scan them, and e-mail them to you if you're interested.

| I don't know the specific brand anymore (possibly DuPont) or the code but the color is Candy Apple Brandywine. It has a silver base coat (several layers) and 28 coats of paint total including 6-8 coats of clear lacquer on top. |

I would like to see it. I'm not going to go with 28 coats. This is going to be a good looking driver rather than a show car. That many layers tend to crack when stressed. I may want to use that same color with a few less layers. Looking forward to it.
Thanks,
Ken Styer

You should look at a newer chip book at the paint supplier, and ask him what the brightest red he has is called. I'm sure he gets asked that question a lot and knows the answer. Guards red is very red, it was popular on street rods when it came out in the 80's.
Sometimes you have to take the number of coats with a grain of salt. If you give a single light pass with the gun enough time to flash, you can call it a coat. If you go with a bc/cc you only need 2 coats of base and 2 or 3 of clear. That's my 2c.

Hello All,
I painted my 73 in Bright Ralley Red (2000). It is a great color, not too orange. It is a little brighter than Ferrari's Ruso Red.
