What is the painted number on my frame? I can see the number '3397"upside down and Painted with a stencile. I can tell it is original. It is located in the pass. side wheel well. What does that number mean? I quess I should save this # when cleaning the frame. What is the original color of the frame? Black? Thanks......steve

That would be the frame part number, and date. PLEASE take a good photo of it, so you can restore it, if you want. The stencils are available, but...I haven't found anyone that could positively tell me exactly WHERE on the frame the stencil went on the '74.

The #'s on your frame should match the last 4 #'s of your VIN-Flandy

Actually, the "3397" is the first 4 numbers of the frame part number, which is 339719-192(4spd frame)...just above that, you should see the date the frame was assembled, also upside down. The frames were assembled with it upside down, and that is why the stencil is that way. I have a stencil, so I can do my frame, but I just don't know exactly where it's supposed to go...I've heard behind the front wheel area, but I have seen them down the side of the frame, under the door area...

Thanks guys. I can see the 33971 pretty clearly. I have been carefully cleaning of the road grim and can see where the date is. Looks like it ends in 73 which I guess would make sense. Its behind the fender well. I will clean the #s as best as I can and take a picture for you to see. Thanks for the info. Very interesting....always learing something new...steve

Thanx, Mike...that's exactly where I found evidence of a number on my car, but there just wasn't enough left to verify thats what it was.
I would love to see a pic of yours, Steve.
I also found what appeared to be the last 2 digits of my VIN(77) at the rear, pass side of the frame, just below the door, and I did put them back on there in green grease marker...

While exploring the frame, I think you could also find markings that should correspond to the number of shims they used.
