Voltage gauge

I was wondering if someone can help me fix the voltage gauge on conter console. I have removed gauge and checked it on bench and it works independent of console but when I hook to console it doesn't work, Also the oil gauge doesn't seem to work it sticks in different reading everytime I start the car and doesn't move as it should. any advice will be a big help |headscratch|

Vette(s): 1979, 350sb, as my kids affectionately call it "shit brown" Corvette purchased in 1996. 84,000+ miles. Not a show car, but I love her just the same.
I would also be interested on information concerning the oil gauge. Mine jumps constantly until the engine gets to a certain temperature, then it reads as it should,staying constant and only moving when the accelerator is pressed. Maybe I have a bad sensor?

If your ammeter does not give any reading in the car but works on the test bench it has to be a wire from either the ground side or the hot side. Do you have a wiring diagram for your car? It should show you where the wires on the ammeter connect. If your meter used to work, then the chances are, one of the connections came loose.

It sounds as if you are missing a ground since there are two problems. Check the back of the case for continuity to ground and then if ground is there, check the sending unit for the oil to see if the wire is hooked up. The sending unit is top back of the engine just behind the intake manifold. Orange wire as I recall. Over time, shade tree mechanics and gremlins fool with such things. The volt meter , as opposed to the ammeter, can get its power from anywhere. I suggest you get a wiring diagram and trace that one. Lectric Limited has nice ones that are laminated. As to Marks jittery gauge, I suspect the sending unit. Old ones are prone to send faulty signals to the gauge.
