How do I tighten a visor that likes to come down on it's own? It's the drives side on an '82.

Thanks.

What do you mean "comes down"? Because of vibration it slowly droops? Is the rod moving or just the visor itself?

It's drooping due to vibration and I'm pretty sure its the rod moving and not the visor moving around the rod.

Thanks.

I could take a lot of heat for this but this is how I remember it. I'm not gonna pull my visor back off to check cause it was a real pain to get together to begin with. As I remember, the rod is attached to the windshield header by screws and does not move. The rod slips ( if you are lucky ) into what I assume is a tube of metal inside the visor. The tube is shaped like a letter C. It is basically a "press fit" between the rod and the tube. You might try to remove the visor and tighten the tube with a pair of regular pliers ( wrap some cloth or other protective material on the visor first ) and gently squeeze the metal together and see if it tightens the tube. Be careful. I had to replace the visors because mine was so tight that when I tried to move the visor, it seemed to be welded to the rod ( probably rusted ).
I hope I am correct with this fix and I hope it helps you. Good luck.

I agree with glenns. Take the rod out and clean it very well. There probably is rust on it. Take a pliers and crimp where the rod goes in to the visor. taht should fix your problem

I agree with glenns and 82dukman.....I had exactly that happen...busted the stoopid visor right off because it was rusted on....now have to replace the whole thing.

I think I'll save this post, I'll need it when I get my baby back. Thanks for the great info and easy instructions. This time I'm going to try to fix it myself! :)

Ditto what they said. I'd like to add that the 2 chrome plated things (the rod) are not connected in the center. They are 2 separate pieces. To pull them out use a very padded with duct tape set of plyers or you'll gnarl up the chrome in the visible spot. I did a similar fix on my '70 - mine was too tight, I removed, polished and put in a bit of silicone to lube them. It's been 2 years and they're still perfect. :) lAlso be careful with the little clip at the edge of the visor, they can tear the fabric if you're too rough. ~Juliet

Now I am confused. The visors are very tight on my 74. How do I loosen them without taking them off or breaking them?

RX, you need to take them off the car. They're held in with 2 screws to the windshield frame on both ends. Then each of those metal shafts you can pull out. They probably have some rust on them. Polish them up w/ chrome polish. Clean out the tubes where they came out of (I used Q-tips & some polish). The put it back together. Add a bit of lubricant if you need it. ~Juliet
