My 72 has suddenly developed a penchant for blowing the 5 amp instrument lamp fuse. I really haven't disturbed anything near the Instrument cluster, the center gauge cluster, nor the console. |headscratch|

Is there a weak point in this circuit that others have dealt with? |ohwell|

Or do I start ripping out each of the possible areas to find the guilty demon? Only one guarantee though, which ever sequence I take, the last area assaulted will be the guilty party.

|cheers|

If it blows as soon as you replace the fuse, you have a hot wire shorted to ground. One of the wires may have just rubbed itself through the insulation and is toching something under the dash. Take out the fuse, gently move the wiring horness around and then install the fuse. If it doesn't pop you'll have your answer. Have a good suplly of fuses handy, this may take a few.

Before getting into the main part of the dash, look at the harness by the radio. It's a point that can cause some problem. It could be the radio itself. If you have an ashtray light, that is a common one as well.
The dash lights have a light grey wire.

Just to close out this thread, I found that the stock power connector from the harness has exposed contacts for 12V & the Instrument light circuits.

After taping them up and fastening it to the harness with a wire tie, no more blown fuses!

Thanks Ken S, great call.
