Assuming the fuse is OK-pull the wire off the sending unit and ground it, if the gauge pegs when you turn the ignition on then replace the sending unit. If no movement then it is either a wiring problem or a gauge problem. You will probably have to pull the cluster.

Rookie question, but where is the sending unit located. My assumption would be on the block somewhere near the front but you could save me some searching.

The sender should be on the intake manifold just to the right of the goose neck for the radiator hose

Many coolant temp sensors on the older Chevrolet is inbetween the last two plugs, #6 and #8, on the right side of the engine.

it could also be on the drivers side of the engine between cylinders 1 and 3

Yes indeed, you are correct there it was on the drivers side between 1 & 3. Tricky to spot it took me a good while to see it.
When I did spot it there it was with nothing attached, that may explain a little. After some searching I finally found the Dark Green wire (Thanks to my Hayes manual for that info!)and grounded it. The guage spiked so that obviously works. I guess all that leaves is the sending unit must be blown.
Looks simple enough to change, are there any surprises awaiting me on the swap? Anyone done this? Is it a simple screw-out screw-in type of thing?

Make sure the engine is cool. You are going to lose some antifreeze. Other than that, just screw it out and back in, the hook up the wire.
