My tach is not working. I guess that it is the printed circuit board. I was wondering if anyone has rebuilt one of them. There does not seem to be much to them. Maybe a trip to Radio Shack could save a few bucks?

Any thoughts?

Thanks

I haven't done it myself but it is on the list to do in the future. (Which could be 50 years from now!!) But I heard it was fairly easy. Like you said there isn't much to them.

Since we are talking about tachs here....I have a mechanical tach on my '69. If I end up getting absolutely crazy and buy the digital gauges from Dakota, how do I change it to an electronic tach? Is there a wire to tie into in the distributor or does the info come from somewhere else?

Hey Glenn, I just rebuilt my mechanical Distributor. The main shaft and the tach drive gear were worn badly enough to make the engine jump timing. I dont know for sure on Vettes, but I do know that tachs in other cars run off of the coil wire. I dont know about the digital technology either.

br75,
First off macke sure the wire at the distributor has a good connection. If so it could be either the filiter or the circuit board. Filters are impossiable to find, but the board is availiable thru Ecklers, etc. Cost about $90.00. You will need to remove tach from the dash which is a job in it's self. Godd luck

Thanks Rick. That worn drive gear could be why I have to keep resetting my timing. Doesn't stay set for more that 2 or 3 weeks at a time. |grrr|

Glenn, I bought the kit from Rik's for around $80. You get the Mainshaft, tach gear, spacer, and button. This is a great deal. It is a very easy job to change. No presses needed. |hammer|

The tach filter from newer (80's) cars works: Camaro/Firebird, Monte SS, etc. Try a junkyard? As long as it's an HEI, it will have the right filter.

As far as fitting digital gauges, they should come with any filter they need. Hook the tach trigger wire to either the points side of the coil, or the Tach plug on the side of an HEI, next to the power plug.
