My tach gauge needle “shakes” When I worked for a Pontiac dealer a couple of decades ago, when a car came in with the speedometer needle shaking, we would pull the center cable out and re-lube it and twist it back in. Can this be done on my 73’ tach cable? If so can I pull it from the distributor?

Thanks,
Rick

Does your car have the tach drive dist? If it does then it is the gear drive in the dist going bad. If not then the cable probably needs attention.

The orignal color was Elkhart green, it was repainted alittle lighter green than original. It's got a pearlesence <sp?> to it. It's actually looks med. green in the shade, and bright green with a goldish tint in the sun,

I was able to lubre the tach cable to stop the "shakes"

I have a squeak under the dash that I'm assuming is either a dry speedometer or tach cable. When you greased, did you disconnect the cable from both ends to avoid grease in the gauges?

you have to disconnect the cable from the tach to remove the center. use a light grease, like the spray white grease in a can. joe

As Joe stated, you only need to disconnect one end, use needlenose pliers to pull out the inner cable from the sheath, grease the cable (not the ends)then push it back into the sheath, give it a little twist at the end to inset into the gauge.
