I guess this is the right place for this question.I've spent many days and nights considering a sub for my 82CE.I didn't want to lose the space but I needed some bottom end on my tunes.I've got a Kenwood HU and replaced both front and rear speakers with some from Memphis audio. They have beautiful crisp highs but no bass.Today I finally broke down and bought a sub. It's made buy audiobahn. It's a ten inch 200w tube like thing. The amp is inside the unit so I didn't need to find a place for the amp part. It's sounds great and looks good, does anybody else have one of these? and how do you like it.

zgator,

Where did you put the the sub? How much room did it take up?

I plan on doing my rear speakers this year, but haven't done it yet, I would like some suggestions on space saving but having a good sound.

Got any pics you can post of the sub. I have been wanting to update the whole sound system of my vette. I have upgraded the headunit to a Pioneer and dash speakers to Boston Acoustics. I have yet to add rears. I was thinking of making a box that would have 6X9 in either end and a Sub in the middle of both adding an amp to the back of the box out of sight. Something similiar to this.

The reason you cant get good bass or volume from the factory rear speaker locations, even with good speakers, is that the mounting plate has tons of space all around it to allow sound from the BACK of the speaker to come around and out into the car's interior.  These sound waves are 180 degrees out of phase with those coming from the front of the speaker, so they cancel each other out.  Result: almost no bass or volume.  I bought Infinity 6x9s and an Alpine tuner.  Installed the speakers in the rear factory locations, turned it on and was extremely disappointed.  I then moved the 6x9s to a "sealed" location and the results were like night and day.  (That's why the tubes and speaker boxes work so well.)  I now have awesome bass and can hear music above the exhaust and open t-tops any time I want.   The location I chose for the speakers was those small storage compartments behind the seats.  I removed the doors to the storage and battery compartments, reinstalled the door frame, made two replacement "doors" of 3/4" birch plywood, covered them in carpet, installed the speakers in them, and laid the new "doors" in place.  I made themn fit snug so they seal decently and don't rattle with heavy base notes.  Sure, I had to give up that tiny storage space, but in a late model C3 with the fastback, that wasn't a problem for me.  I have to repeat - the difference in bass and overall volume is amazing.

I'll try to get some posted in the next couple of weeks, but I don't have any pictures of it and I don't have a digital camara, so I'll have to take some photos and wait until the wife finishes the roll and develops it.  That will likely not be until Easter.  Sorry I am not more technologically advanced!

I should also say, the option I took was pretty easy to do attractively because I have black/charcoal interior.  So I was able to get some black interior carpet at Pep Boys that was a reasonable match for my interior.  For you guys with other carpet colors, it may not be nearly as easy to make it look good, unless you have replaced your carpet and kept the old carpet for just such occasions.

I'm currently putting my replacement system together, I like what Eddie 70 did with his, but I agree with Chesh, the sound has to be "captured" or not allowed to bounce all over the interior. I'm using Infinity Kappa's 4x6 in the front kick panels, 6x9's in the rear, with an Infinity 360 W amp. This will all be hooked into an Alpine head unit.

What I plan to use to hold my rear speakers and amp, is a pressure fit custom boom box sold by Eckler's #27611 (black without speakers) for $199.00 they also come in other colors. This box should address the bass sound loss that Chesh mentioned. I've been told by a stereo installer that the complete system should sound awesome.

Ma speakers are not bad, but to put in an Audiobahn anything is unforgiveable.
Use a really good pair of front speakers and you will not need rear ones. The compartment is not that big. Also,  if you do decide to use rear speakers as well, make sure the gain on the amp to those is turned down so as not to overpower the fronts.
Remember the sound staging is from the front of the car, not the rear. Think about the last time you went to a concert, was the band playing behind you ??
As far as a sub, there are some companies out there that make vehicle specific sub boxes so as not to overwhelm the rear compartment.
Good luck
I am having a demo car built for the speaker company I work for and when it is finished I will post some pics.

Nice setups, does anyone one know who made the speaker panels for the rear shown in the pictures ?
