I took the column apart to replace the turn signal switch and now my key will not turn to off. Obliviously! I got something installed wrong. I need a good diagram if anyone has one I would really appreciate it.

Check out Jim Shea's Steering Papers for just about any info you will need on Corvette steering columns and gearboxes. Thumbs Up

What he said! I've found Jim Shea's site very helpful!

Guys and gals, I have looked at Shea's stuff but I can't tell how some parts go back together. When I took the lock plate off there where two metal spring like parts in the bottom of the housing. From what I can tell, they may be part of the key warning buzzer. Does anyone have any pics they took when you performed a bearing replacement? I have know idea how these parts go.

Hey Mac, just went through my column a month or so ago. Sorry I don't have any pics, but could you post some pics of the parts your talking about ?? They might jump start my memory and maybe I can help you out.

A pic of your "spare parts" will definitely help determine the issue. The key warning buzzer switch fits down into the casting by the ignition cylinder. It can cause a problem turning the key all the way off sometimes,if not properly installed. Other things can cause it, too, so we need to know what parts you are not sure about, then we can help with re-assembly.

I think that's one of the two spring like parts Mac is referring to. Once you remove the key buzzer switch shown in the picture, there is another black spring clip thats supposed to be underneath it.

Sorry about the size. Not sure how to make smaller. Anyway, I got it all back together it turned out to be the bezel just behind the lock housing. Apparently it must be turned all the way left when you put things back. This is so the ratcheting mechanism rides in channel. The switch works good but will not return to the lock position and the key will not come out. I guess I have the gear behind the lock cylinder in the wrong place. The other bad news is that I still have my no brake light issue when lights are on and no turn signal when brake depressed and lights off. Turn signals work when lights off and brake not pressed. Brake lights work when lights off. The other weird thing is that when I turn my left signal on and car is off, but the lights are on the accessory power comes on. I have a screwed up wiring problem and I sure don't no where to begin. Thanks for all your help Guys.

Mac, don't worry about picture size, I'm sure Joel will perform some of his admin. magic and resize. So regarding the problem, just confirming this is a '72 with what appears to be a standard (not tilt/tele) column ?? You state you have it all back together wtith key and elec. problems, are the two spring things in your hand are still out ?? I have a friend with a spare '73 standard column, I may go steal it and take it apart to help you out. I haven't worked on a standard column in a long time and your first photo looks totally unfamiliar to me right now. Did all of your elec. problems start when you replaced the TS switch ??
