I have a 74 vette that will not engage the starter. when you turn the key, to start you get nothing. new battery, new cables, new starter. at somepoint today after forcing the key to go as far as possible, the starter engaged but then nothing. Is there a rod in the column that connects to an ignition switch like whats on a ford?

Yup. Try moving the tilt wheel to the full down position to start, and the full up position. Sometimes just moving the wheel will get it to crank in an emergency.
The ignition switch is adjustable, but it's a pita to get to without disassembling half the column.
