Speedometer

Ken,

The same plastic/nylon gears that work the odometer also work the trip mileage indicator, or is that separate from the odometer and another set of gears that need to be repaired also?

With a trip odo, they are both driven by the same gears.  There is just an extra to drive the trip odometer.  If you order them in advance, get them all.  They are not very expensive the last time I got them.  Granted that has been a few years.  But they still can't be that much.kstyer38869.6961574074

Thanks Ken. I'll have to talk to you some more about this when I get ready to tackle  taking out the speedo. Right now I'm trying to get my tranny that Joel fixed  back in along with a new clutch and get an MSD ignition system installed and all six u-joints replaced. I've given up on the possibility of the new console and under carpet insulation installation. (try saying that one fast)  Just not enough time left. Just wanna make sure I get there!

Does GM have a specific grease to lube the cable or gears?

Graphite powder works well, but you need to remove the inner cable to do it. Otherwise, you can run some engine oil down thru the cable to help for a while, or pull the inner cable out, and run it thru a can of lightweight grease.

 Well . Now, along with my odometer and trip milage indicator not working and the speedometer getting jumpy especially in cold weather, my tach decided to go belly-up. It started jumping around, sticking, screeching and finally just flopped to '0' and stayed there. Guess I'm gonna have to send them both in. How hard are they to remove and whatcha gotta do? Can you get to them just by taking off the top dash pad?

I have the same problem on my 69. did get the trip dohiky back to zero and have been watchin a speedometer on ebay but it is also old and may not have much life to go. does anyone know a reputable place that can refurbish the odometer and trip meter?

Your tach will most likely be the tach drive at the distributor.  Mine is stuffed and the only way to fix it is to get a new distributor mainshaft and tach drive assy.  My tach and cable are fine.  If you can get someone to spin the cable end at the distributor and the tach needle jumps it will most likely be what I've listed above.
