Not to sure,but I think you have to take the whole thing out. I'm fixin to change out my speedo and not looking forward to it. Maybe Joel will give you a hint.

You're going to have to quit winding that thing up so tight. You're supposed to let off the gas when the needle reaches that last number.

You can replace the needle/pointer if you have steady hands, and some patience. First, you have to get the gauge out of the dash, and the speed-o assy, separated. The needles are just a press fit on the dial shaft, much like the hands of a clock.
Not sure if the service manual covers this particular "repair", but I am sure it covers removal/replacement of the gauge cluster.

Replaced my speedo today, that is a thankless job for sure. Went pretty good after I dropped the steering wheel down. Good luck on the needle, I would offer you my old one but it's just that old.
