speedo

My speedometer quit working ,,, i checked the upper cable and connections and they looked okay... yesterday i changed the lower cable to the transmission and now the speedo jumps around. anyone have this happen and any ideas in what to do to fix this?

The cable is sticking in the housing. Disconnect the cable at the end closest to the speedo, this is for both cables so the lower one comes loose from the transducer, and the upper from the speedo head. Pull out the center of the cable. Lube the cable with a light coat of axle grease, lithimum white grease, or similar coating. Reinstall the cable and it will work fine.

I had a little needle bounce after replacing the lower cable. After taking a closer look, I was able to change the routing of the cable a bit near the end that connects to the cruise control transducer, so that it has a little wider (less tight) bend in the cable. Seemed to help the bounce...

wheel bearing grease will work just fine to lube it. Be sure not to use too much...just a coating, too much can pre-load the cable.

do you think it is the lower cable i just replaced, i grahited it .. what about the upper cable could it be that one?

Streaker...I just remembered that Mid-America Motorsports has a cable/tach lube fitting that works great for relubing the cable.

have you ever used the Speedo/Tach Cable Lubricator ? and how well does it do?

Yeah i bought one and used it...works GREAT. It's got a zerk fitting that will work with any standard grease gun. The nice thing about it is that it forces grease through the entire cable and lubes it. If you do decide to use it you should use cable lube/grease. You can get it at an auto parts store or a motorcyle parts dealership , Bel-Ray makes some that I have used on my dirt bikes.
