1. disconnect the battery ground cable

2. loosen the windshield upper trim moulding and remove the windshield side trim moulding

3 remove one screw from instrument panel reinforcement and one screw from centre console

4. lift up the instrument panel top pad and disconnect the speaker plug - remove instrument panel and unscrew nuts that secure the speaker to the underside of the instrument panel top pad

this is as per Haynes manual - hope it helps

If your Vette is an 80, then it is different. There is a grille over each speaker that just pops out. The speaker just unbolts, although it is a PIA to get hem out (unless you pull the wind shield). You have to be careful to get the proper speaker as only certain ones will fit (ask me, I know). Hope this helps.

Ya mine is a 80 that helps a bunch. Just wasn't sure how the grill came out. Thanks again

It is tight close to the windshield, getting the two screws out.  Your socket will not fit.  I used a small vice grip to grip the proper socket size and it went well.

The replacement speaker that was recommended to me was the PolkAudio DB461 (4x6).  Modern, premium quality/sound for the money.

These guys are correct. The grill pops out. There are tabs on both sides. I lifted mine in the middle and worked it out carefully. Those speaker bolts against the windshield are a PITA indeed. I used a open end wrench to remove them.

I just had my speaker out the other day to get my fingers in behind the left turn signal indicator light socket. I just put in a new printed circuit board and must not have had good contact. So I moved it around and now it works.
