Does anyone know what size speakers are fitted in the front kick panels of a '69? Since bezels are now available made ready for new CD stereos I'm considering installing one in my '69 and save the original bezel and radio. The original AM/FM radio does a poor job of holding a station so I'd like to have an Alpine like I have in my '78.

If I do this I'd like to upgrade the speakers as well, but would like to know the size of what's there now without pulling the kick panels first.

I remember seeing a website that had very detailed instructions and pics of fabricating brackets and installing speakers behind the kick panels. Anyone else recall the website?

Isn't there an issue with the ohm rating on new speakers? This was discussed in an earlier thread, but even the vette vendor's replacements are 4 ohm. My radio is stamped "use 6 - 12 ohm speakers only."
What can I do to protect the radio if I install a 4 ohm speaker?

Dave,

The 4 ohm speakers do not perform correctly and can damage your factory stereo. My car's previous owner did just that. I recently replaced the 4 ohm speakers put in by himr with 10 ohm factory correct speakers( bought from Buy/sell/trade board). WOW!! - what a difference. Sounds good. Its no Alpine, but for a factory stereo made 30 years ago, sounds ok.

add a 6 ohm resistor with a high enough power rating to the circuit to fix this..

but the original question dealt with adding a new stereo

you definitely want to use new modern speak with a modern stereo..

btw.. i dont know what the power rating of an original stereo is.. but its not much.. i would think a 10 watt resistor on each side would do..

Either the resistor as Ben suggest, or if you want 4 speakers, connect two 4 ohm in series per channel.

yeah like ken said... but make sure you do them series like he suggested..

running 2 4ohm's in parallel drops the resistance to 2 ohms and therefore makes the problem worse..

i know most of you know the difference between series and parallel... but if in doubt.. ask..
