unscrew the silver center button that you depress to shift by turning left.  There is a spring underneath it.  Remove the button and spring.  Go eat a bowl of Wheaties, practice your french, and turn the ball to the left (if it hasn't been removed in 33 years, it may take a big effort to remove.
