New at this and wondering how to remove the automatic shift knob.
also,can i use a replacement knob that specs for 15mm shaft?

Well Richard I know on the 76 it unscrews. Not sure about the thread specs though. I took my OEM off and had a Hurst T drilled and tapped at a machine shop to fit. The button had to be custom made though at the shop. Heck thats what Corvette machinist friends are for right?

Purchase the AIM; it shows the installation.
Unscrew the thumb button.
Be prepared to catch the spring underneath the thumb button.
Unscrew the shifter knob. 
 
Shifter threads are almost certainly SAE.  I would be surprised if the metric knob you want to use will fit.
