Seat belt dilemma

I need to replace the shoulder belt on my 72. It’s the original belt and very worn, to the point the edges are torn. I spent last weekend in Orlando at the NCRS meet going through tons of old belts but to no avail. I’m not as concerned about replacing it with an original belt, as I am one that matches the remaining belts (dark saddle). Any ideas and/or suggestions. Both lap belts and the passengers shoulder belt are still in good shape.

I remember seeing some threads in here about reconditioning seat belts and dying them different colors. That way you could find a belt in good condition and not be limited by color. The 'Search' function only goes back 90 days so browse down a page or so and start looking.

I used a company called Ssnake-Oyl to replace one of the seatbelts on my CE. I was pleased with the result. They even send you a piece of the belt material so you can approve the color before they do the job.

Try this site . They do a great job, if you send them the belts they also redo the connections to like new.

I used snake oyl. Very nive looking belts, but I was a little disappointed that the belt material feels a little thinner and certainly more flexible than the original. I don't know, but maybe that's the way the original belts came from the factory, but they just stiffened up over time. (?) Wierd, but I just like the stiffer belts better.

I would not dye seat belts myself. They are there to save your life, so I wouldn't touch them with anything but a wet cloth. Maybe not a problem, but I wouldn't take any chance of the dye weakening the belt.

Went thru the "seat Belt" deal many years ago with my 72 and at the time I kept running into the fact that 72s' were somehow different
then other years when It came to seat belts... Like a set from a 70
68 etc would NOT work ...

But I honestly can not remember why 72's were different does anyone
know... ?


Somewhere in the back of my mind this morning I seem to recall that the male end of a 72 would NOT lock into a 70 Female end etc.. BUT I am not sure...  

Some "gal" did write a Book on Corvette Seatblets that I purchased and still have...(yea I have it but who knows where?

 I believe that 72 belts have a retractor under the seat to take up slack where the early belts (68-70) must be adjusted by hand---both bolted to floor in different places-- marty

My 72 has the retractors under the seat, in a little well, lowest point in the car....just the right place for water to settle into and rust up the things.

I need to go the seat belt route soon, but refurbishing the retractors and belts is very expensive....I think I was quoted $500...ouch.

I am going the basic replacement, non retracting, generic type for $50. The other $450 is going into paint and such. The shoulder belts will just be there for looks....

Someplace I heard that a 90 camaro rear belts are similar???? Maybe that'l work??
