Thats what I thought too. It would be worth a shot to try the OEM that are on the car. Worst case scenario would be that he would end up with a freshly painted OEM set. No matter what outcome, it becomes a win / win...

So should I use a key and a paint scrapper from Da Depot to remove the black? I could always re-rustoleum them. ( Sorry Joel for the bad humor). Thanks for the help!

remove them and use paint striper then buff and polish that is what i did to the 78 i am working on at present.

I have had several 80's over the year's and have stripped the rockers using paint stripper.When I got tired of the look, I just resprayed using black satin spray paint from local hardware. Finish looked like stock. Hope this helps.

Apparently, the moldings that are painted are not anodized. That would definitely make it easier to polish them.
I never meant to imply they couldn't be polished, just that it is much harder to accomplish on anodized aluminuminum.
Anodizing is a process to produce an oxide film or coating on metals and alloys by electrolysis. The metal to be treated is made the anode in an electrolytic cell and its surface is electrochemically oxidized. Anodization can improve certain surface properties, such as corrosion resistance, abrasion resistance, hardness, appearance, etc. One metal very often anodized is aluminum, all the above properties improve, furthermore, since the surface film is porous, the aluminum metal can even be colored by the application of pigments or dies in the pores.
